Processing various fiber optic patch cords

Processing fiber optic patch cords involves cutting, stripping, cleaning, connector assembly, polishing, and testing to ensure high-quality optical performance.Step 1: Preparation and CuttingSelect the appropriate fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode), connector type (SC, LC, FC, ST, MTP), and jacket material (PVC, LSZH, or armored) based on your application needs . Measure the required cable length and cut the fiber using an automatic cutting machine for precision. For short pigtails (under 5 meters), reserve extra length for handling and connector assembly . Roll the cut fiber into a loop and secure it gently with a binding wire to prevent stress on the fiber .Step 2: Stripping and CleaningRemove the outer jacket and buffer coating using a jacket stripper, typically for diameters of 3.0 mm, 2.0 mm, or 0.9 mm . Strip the tight-buffered inner fiber carefully to avoid damage. Clean the exposed fiber with alcohol or ultrasonic cleaning equipment to remove dust, oils, and residues .Step 3: Connector AssemblyInject epoxy into the connector ferrule and insert the cleaned fiber. Cure the epoxy in an oven to secure the fiber in place . Assemble the connector housing and attach the strain relief boot to protect the fiber from bending or pulling. Ensure the fiber is properly aligned within the ferrule to minimize insertion loss.Step 4: PolishingPolish the ferrule end-face using automatic polishing machines to achieve a smooth, flat surface. This step is critical for reducing signal loss and back reflection. After polishing, clean the ferrule with ultrasonic equipment to remove any debris .Step 5: Inspection and TestingInspect the connector end-face under a 400x microscope to check for scratches, contamination, or defects . Perform insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) testing to ensure the patch cord meets performance standards. Advanced testing may include interferometer inspection to verify optical performance and connector durability .Step 6: Final HandlingLabel the patch cord according to specifications and carefully coil it for storage or shipment. Avoid tight bends or excessive tension to maintain fiber integrity . By following these steps, you can produce high-quality fiber optic patch cords that meet industry standards and ensure reliable data transmission. Proper attention to cleaning, alignment, and testing is essential to prevent signal degradation and maintain network performance.
