Principle of Fiber Optic Stress Sensor

Fiber optic stress sensing systems detect mechanical stress by monitoring changes in light propagation caused by strain, bending, or deformation in the optical fiber.Basic PrincipleA fiber optic stress sensor operates by transducing mechanical stress into measurable changes in the optical signal traveling through the fiber. The system typically consists of a light source, an optical fiber, a sensing element or transducer, and a detector. When stress or force is applied to the fiber, it alters the fiber's physical properties—such as its refractive index, core geometry, or grating spacing—which in turn modulates the light signal in terms of intensity, wavelength, phase, or polarization. The detector measures these changes, allowing the stress to be quantified (Luna Innovations Guide) .Microbending-Based Stress SensingOne common approach is the microbending optical fiber sensor, where the fiber is mounted on a support with a network of holes or grooves. Applied stress causes microbends in the fiber, leading to attenuation of transmitted light. The degree of light loss correlates with the magnitude of the applied stress. The sensor's performance depends on the mechanical properties of the support material and the fiber configuration, which influence the distribution of high- and low-stress zones along the fiber (SCIRP, 2013) .Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) SensorsAnother widely used method is Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing, where a periodic variation of the refractive index is inscribed along the fiber core. Stress or strain changes the grating pitch or effective refractive index, shifting the Bragg wavelength of reflected light. This shift is directly proportional to the applied stress, enabling precise measurement. FBG sensors are advantageous because they are immune to light source fluctuations and fiber losses, and can be multiplexed for distributed sensing along a single fiber (Luna Innovations Guide) .Distributed Fiber Optic Stress SensingIn distributed sensing systems, the entire fiber acts as a continuous sensor. Techniques such as backscattering analysis (Rayleigh, Brillouin, or Raman scattering) detect local changes in light caused by stress, strain, or temperature along the fiber length. This allows real-time monitoring over kilometers, with precise localization of stress events, making it suitable for structural health monitoring, pipelines, and critical infrastructure (Fiber Broadband, 2023) .SummaryThe principle of fiber optic stress sensing relies on the interaction between light and the fiber's physical state. Stress-induced changes in the fiber—whether through microbending, grating deformation, or distributed scattering—modulate the optical signal, which is then detected and analyzed. These systems offer high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and the ability to monitor over long distances, making them ideal for structural, industrial, and safety applications.
