Optical Cable Layers

The optical signal in a fiber-optic cable is carried in the core layer.Core LayerThe core is the innermost layer of a fiber-optic cable, made of extremely pure glass or sometimes plastic, and is the actual pathway for light transmission. Light travels through the core by total internal reflection, which is enabled by the difference in refractive index between the core and the surrounding cladding. The core diameter varies depending on the fiber type: single-mode fibers have a smaller core for long-distance transmission, while multimode fibers have a larger core for shorter distances and multiple light paths .Cladding LayerSurrounding the core is the cladding, which has a slightly lower refractive index than the core. Its primary function is to reflect light back into the core, preventing signal loss and maintaining the integrity of the optical signal .Coating and Protective LayersOutside the cladding, the coating and additional layers such as buffer tubes, aramid yarn, and the outer jacket provide mechanical protection, tensile strength, and environmental resistance.
