Switches in the indoor distribution box

Indoor distribution boxes use main switches, MCBs, and RCCBs to safely control and protect electrical circuits.Main SwitchThe main switch is typically a double-pole MCB that controls the entire power supply entering the distribution box. It has the highest current rating among all devices in the box, often around 63A for domestic installations, and connects directly to the incoming phase and neutral lines. Turning off the main switch disconnects power from all downstream circuits, providing a safe way to perform maintenance or respond to emergencies .Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs)MCBs are used to protect individual circuits from overloads and short circuits. In indoor distribution boxes, single-pole MCBs are commonly used for lighting, sockets, and small appliances, while double-pole MCBs may be used for special or high-power loads. Each MCB ensures that if a fault occurs in a specific circuit, only that circuit is disconnected, leaving the rest of the system operational .Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs)RCCBs provide protection against earth leakage, electric shock, and insulation failures. They detect leakage currents and disconnect the circuit if the current exceeds a set threshold, typically 30mA for domestic installations. The RCCB is usually connected downstream of the main switch, and the outputs of the RCCB feed the individual MCBs .Additional ComponentsIndoor distribution boxes may also include bus bars for neutral and earth connections, fuses, and indicator lights to show the status of the mains supply. Modern smart DB boxes can integrate energy monitoring units and communication modules for remote control and real-time monitoring .Layout and SafetySwitches in the distribution box are arranged to allow easy access, clear labeling, and safe operation. Proper wiring diagrams and layouts, following standards like IEC 61439 and IEC 60364, ensure that the system is safe, maintainable, and compliant with electrical codes . In summary, the indoor distribution box uses a combination of main switches, MCBs, and RCCBs to manage, protect, and control electrical circuits efficiently, ensuring safety and reliability for residential or commercial installations.
