However, without a router, you cannot create a local network, assign IP addresses to multiple devices, or provide Wi-Fi connectivity . A router is responsible for distributing the internet connection to multiple devices, managing traffic, and providing security features such as firewalls and parental controls . Some ISPs offer combined ONT-router units, which integrate both functions into a single device. These all-in-one devices simplify setup and allow multiple devices to connect via Wi-Fi or Ethernet without needing a separate router . In summary, while a router is not strictly required for a single wired device, it is essential for connecting multiple devices, enabling Wi-Fi, and managing your home network effectively. The ONT alone handles the conversion of fiber signals but does not provide the network management functions of a router .
