Optical module built-in power supply

Optical modules do not include an independent power supply; they receive power from the host system through their electrical interface.Optical modules, such as SFP, SFP+, and SFP28 transceivers, are designed to convert electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa, but they rely on the host device to provide the necessary electrical power for operation . The module typically connects to a board via a standardized electrical interface, which supplies both the data signals and the operating voltage, commonly around +3.3 V for SFP modules . Internally, the module contains components such as the Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA), Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA), driver and control circuits, and monitoring circuits, but it does not generate its own power . Some modules include automatic power control (APC) circuits to regulate the optical output, but these circuits operate using the power supplied from the host system . When designing or deploying optical modules, it is important to ensure that the host system can provide the correct voltage and sufficient current to meet the module's power consumption specifications, which are typically listed in the datasheet . This external power supply arrangement allows optical modules to remain compact, hot-pluggable, and compatible with a wide range of network equipment.
