Cable tray bending marking

Cable tray bends are fabricated by marking the bend angle, cutting side walls, forming the curve, and rejoining the sections to ensure smooth cable routing.Tools and Materials RequiredGalvanized sheet metal (typically 1.6 mm or as per design)Measuring tape or scaleMarker or scriberAngle grinder or metal shearDrill machineRivets, nuts, and boltsBending tools (manual or hydraulic press brake)Welding machine (optional)Step-by-Step Fabrication Process1. Marking the Bend Angle Decide the required bend angle (commonly 45° or 90°). On a flat tray sheet, mark the centerline and side edges. Divide the curve into equal segments (3–5 sections) to create a smooth radius for the bend . 2. Cutting the Side Walls Mark and cut triangular or rectangular sections on the side walls where the bend will occur. These cuts allow the tray to fold without deforming the structure . 3. Forming the Bend Use a manual bender or press brake to bend each segment slightly, gradually forming the required curve. Ensure uniform bending to maintain tray integrity and proper cable support . 4. Rejoining the Side Walls After bending, rejoin the cut sections using welding or bolting/riveting with metal strips for reinforcement. This restores structural strength and ensures the bend can support cables safely . 5. Drilling Connection Holes Drill holes at each end of the bend to connect it to straight tray sections using nuts and bolts. This allows secure assembly on-site .Additional TipsFor wire mesh cable trays, bends can be made live at the project using a bolt cutter, which preserves the protective zinc layer and allows quick adjustments .Use a fabrication calculator to determine V-cut dimensions, bolt hole positions, and marking intervals for precise bends, especially for inclined or vertical trays .Always check the radius and alignment to ensure smooth cable routing and avoid sharp bends that could damage cables . By following these steps, cable tray bends can be fabricated efficiently, maintaining both structural integrity and safe cable management.
