Installing Fiber Optic Sensors

Proper installation of fiber optic sensors requires careful surface preparation, adhesive selection, fiber routing, and environmental protection to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.Surface PreparationBefore installing a fiber optic sensor, clean and prepare the surface thoroughly. This typically involves cleaning, abrading, and conditioning the substrate to remove contaminants and improve adhesion, similar to standard strain gauge installation procedures . For metallic or composite surfaces, ensure the area is smooth and free of oils or dust to maximize bonding strength.Adhesive SelectionChoosing the right adhesive is critical. Commonly recommended adhesives include M-Bond 200 and AE-10, which provide strong adhesion and are suitable for both short-term and long-term applications . After applying the adhesive, allow the recommended cure time before applying any protective layers. For temporary or non-critical installations, double-sided tape can be used, but it is less reliable under environmental stress such as temperature changes or humidity .Fiber Routing and Strain ReliefProper fiber routing is essential to prevent damage and ensure accurate measurements. Avoid sharp bends and secure the fiber to prevent movement or strain that could affect readings . Use strain relief loops at connection points to reduce stress on the fiber and adhesive interface.Environmental ProtectionFor outdoor or harsh environments, protect the fiber with a silicone layer (RTV) or conduit to shield it from moisture, UV exposure, and mechanical damage . In high-voltage applications, such as transformer monitoring, ensure the fiber is safely fixed in contact with the target area and routed to avoid crushing or interference .Specialized Installation MethodsEmbedment in concrete: Common in civil engineering for structural health monitoring, where the fiber is integrated into the material during casting .Perimeter security systems: Use stainless steel wire ties and conduit to attach fibers to fences, and perform intrusion simulations to calibrate the system .High-voltage monitoring: Install sensors at the hottest spots of windings using spacers and route cables carefully to feedthroughs .Testing and VerificationAfter installation, verify sensor performance by comparing readings with reference measurements or performing controlled tests. This ensures the fiber is properly bonded and functioning as intended . By following these tips—surface preparation, proper adhesive use, careful fiber routing, environmental protection, and testing—you can achieve accurate, reliable, and long-lasting fiber optic sensor installations across a variety of applications.
